Lauterbrunnen Information

Lauterbrunnen (795 m) lies in an impressive glaciated valley between gigantic rock walls and summits. 72 waterfalls plummet over the walls down to the valley.

The Staubbachfall – one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe – inspired Goethe to write his poem “The song of ghosts over waters”. The village is the departure point of the cable car with the most spectacular scenery in Europe. In summer numerous footpaths and mountain bike routes await discovery. In winter both the snow sport regions of Mürren – Schilthorn and Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen are in the close vicinity with Grindelwald-First just a ski away. One of the longest ski runs leads from the Schilthorn down to Lauterbrunnen – a descent of over 2000 metres!

For cross-country fans Lauterbrunnen offers a track of approximately 16 km, leading past frozen waterfalls. Those seeking adventure can choose from a variety of adventure activities that are bound to give you an adrenalin kick.

The road south from Interlaken shadows the train tracks and the Lütschine river through Wilderswil and on into the deep countryside. Cliffs close in either side as you reach Zweilütschinen: the Schwarze (black) Lütschine tumbles in from Grindelwald further east, while the road and railway continue south alongside the rushing Weisse Lütschine (named “white” for its foaminess) through a charming wooded gorge. As the valley opens up, airily broad, sunlit and impossibly picturesque, you enter the busy little village of Lauterbrunnen. The train station is the junction point for journeys up to Wengen and on up to the Jungfraujoch

The wealth of opportunity for sightseeing and exploring around and about is virtually limitless. At the entrance to the village is a cable car cresting the west wall of the valley: this serves Grütschalp, from where a cliff-edge train – one of the most scenic rides in Switzerland – trundles its way to Mürren. You might, however, prefer to follow the steep path up to Grütschalp (rising 690m in 2hr), to take advantage of the panoramic stroll alongside the tracks to Mürren (1hr 10min).
